1. See the Sea Lions in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno

Start with a walk along the waterfront. Sea lions are often found on benches, boat decks and the steps near Playa de Oro. You may also see pelicans, marine iguanas and Sally Lightfoot crabs around the shore.

Keep at least two metres away from sea lions and never stand between one and the water, especially near adult males.

The sea lions are part of everyday life in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, so don't rush past them. You'll find them around the waterfront and beaches, but give them plenty of space rather than getting close for a photo.

2. Visit the Galápagos Interpretation Center

The Galápagos Interpretation Center near Playa Mann is a useful first stop and entry is free. Exhibits explain the formation of the islands, their wildlife, human history and current conservation efforts. Visiting before the rest of the island can give you more context for the places you see later.

I'd visit the Interpretation Center early in the trip, especially if this is your first time in the Galápagos. It is free and you can see it in under an hour, but it gives you useful context about the islands' formation, wildlife and conservation. The rest of San Cristóbal makes more sense once you've been here.

3. Hike Cerro Tijeretas and Snorkel at Muelle Tijeretas

The trail to Cerro Tijeretas passes through lava fields and cactus-covered areas before reaching a viewpoint over Shipwreck Bay and Kicker Rock. Frigate birds can often be seen in the area.

Continue to Muelle Tijeretas, a sheltered spot where you can snorkel for free. Sea lions are often seen in the water, so keep your distance. High tide usually provides better conditions.

This is one of the easiest ways to get a bit of everything without booking a tour. You get the walk up Cerro Tijeretas, good views and the chance to snorkel near sea lions at Muelle Tijeretas. I'd do this early in your stay before filling your schedule with boat trips.

4. Watch the Sunset at Playa Mann

Playa Mann is close to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and is a popular place to watch the sunset. You can swim during the day and return in the evening when the beach becomes quieter and sea lions gather along the shore.

Playa Mann is worth visiting twice if you have the time. Go earlier for a swim, then come back towards sunset when the light is better and the beach feels more relaxed. The sea lions around the beach make the evening more interesting too.

5. Visit Playa Punta Carola

Punta Carola has a sandy beach, clear water and plenty of wildlife. Marine iguanas and sea lions are commonly seen around the beach, while turtles can sometimes be spotted in the water.

Walk towards the red-and-white lighthouse for views of the coast and opportunities to see pelicans and blue-footed boobies. The beach is also a popular surf spot.

Punta Carola is the beach I'd choose when I want something a little quieter than the beaches closer to town. Even if you're not interested in surfing, the walk towards the lighthouse is worth doing for the coastal views. Take your time rather than treating it as just another beach stop.

6. Hike to El Junco Crater Lake

El Junco is the only permanent freshwater lake in the Galápagos. It sits inside a volcanic crater in the island's highlands.

The walk to the crater takes around 15–20 minutes, followed by a trail around the lake. Frigate birds often visit the lake to wash salt from their feathers. Go early for clearer conditions and bring proper shoes, particularly during the rainy season when the trail can become muddy.

I'd try to visit El Junco early because the weather can completely change what you see. On a clear morning, the view across the crater lake is impressive, but clouds can roll in and hide most of it. Wear proper shoes too, especially if the trail is wet.

7. Visit La Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado

La Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado is a breeding centre for San Cristóbal's giant tortoises. The tortoises live in semi-natural surroundings, and visitors can walk along the trails independently. It is a good stop to combine with El Junco and Puerto Chino during a highlands day trip.

La Galapaguera works well as part of a full day trip in the highlands rather than as a separate trip. You can take your time walking around the tortoise reserve and then combine it with El Junco and Puerto Chino. That way, you see several parts of the island without spending the whole day travelling back and forth.

8. Swim at Playa Puerto Chino

Playa Puerto Chino is reached by a short paved trail through dry forest and cactus. The beach is suitable for swimming and often has sea lions and turtles nearby.

There is little shade, so bring water, a hat, and sunscreen. It is commonly included as part of a highlands tour.

Puerto Chino takes a little more effort to reach, but I'd still make the trip if you want a quieter beach. There is very little shade, so bring enough water and sunscreen with you. Earlier in the day is more comfortable, particularly if you plan to walk around before swimming.

9. Snorkel at La Lobería

La Lobería is named after its resident sea lion colony. The white-sand beach has a rocky shoreline and good snorkelling conditions when the sea is calm.

Sea lions often swim close to shore, and turtles can also be seen in the water. Check the conditions before entering, as the area can become rough when the swell increases.

La Lobería is an easy place to try snorkelling straight from the beach, especially when the sea is calm. I'd check the conditions before going rather than assuming it will always be suitable. If the water is rough, there is no point forcing it when you have other beaches closer to town.

10. Surf at Punta Carola or Tongo Reef

San Cristóbal has several surf breaks, including Punta Carola and Tongo Reef. Surf shops around the waterfront rent boards and can provide information about local conditions.

If you do not surf, Punta Carola is still worth visiting to watch surfers from the beach.

You don't have to surf to enjoy these spots. If you're interested in giving it a try, the local surf shops can help you choose a suitable beach and arrange lessons if needed. For beginners, I'd ask about the conditions on the day rather than deciding which spot to use in advance.

11. Take a 360° Island Tour

A 360° boat tour travels around San Cristóbal and reaches places that are difficult or impossible to visit by land. Stops can include Punta Pitt, Kicker Rock, Cerro Brujo and Rosa Blanca Bay, depending on the operator and conditions.

Punta Pitt is known for its birdlife, including blue-footed, red-footed and Nazca boobies. Tours also usually include time for snorkelling.

If you want to see as much of San Cristóbal as possible in one day, the 360° tour makes sense. It takes you to places that are difficult to reach independently and gives you a good mix of wildlife, beaches and scenery. It is a long day, though, so take plenty of water, sunscreen and something to protect you from the sun.

12. Take a Kicker Rock Day Trip

Kicker Rock, or León Dormido, is one of San Cristóbal's most popular boat trips. The volcanic formation has a narrow channel where visitors can snorkel or dive.

The surrounding waters are home to hammerhead sharks, Galápagos sharks, sea turtles, rays and sea lions. Kicker Rock is a protected marine site, so visits must be made through an authorised boat tour with a licensed national park guide.

If snorkelling is your main interest, look for a tour focused on snorkellers rather than a mixed snorkelling and diving group.

Kicker Rock is one of the trips I'd prioritise if snorkelling and marine life are high on your list. The conditions can be demanding, so choose a tour that suits your swimming ability rather than simply booking the cheapest one. If you're not diving, a snorkelling-focused trip also means the day is built around what you actually want to do.

How Many Days Do You Need in San Cristóbal?

Three full days is enough to see the main attractions without rushing.

• Day 1: Explore Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, visit the Interpretation Center, hike Cerro Tijeretas and snorkel at Muelle Tijeretas. End the day at Playa Mann.
• Day 2: Take a boat trip to Kicker Rock or join a 360° tour around the island.
• Day 3: Visit El Junco, La Galapaguera and Puerto Chino on a highlands trip.

If you have four or five days, add a trip to Española, visit Punta Carola and La Lobería, or spend more time exploring the town.

And if the Galápagos is one leg of a longer Latin America trip, it pairs naturally with a Caribbean beach stop on the way home. Punta Cana or Cabarete is an easy add-on for a few days of rest after all the hiking and snorkelling.

Three days is enough to cover the main sights, but I'd add an extra day if your schedule allows. Boat trips depend on sea conditions, and having some flexibility means one cancelled tour doesn't throw off your entire itinerary. It also gives you time to enjoy Puerto Baquerizo Moreno without rushing from one activity to the next.

Best Time to Visit San Cristóbal

San Cristóbal can be visited throughout the year, but conditions vary by season. December to May is generally warmer and wetter, with calmer seas and good conditions for swimming and snorkelling.

June to November is cooler and drier, although the sea can be rougher. This period can also bring more marine wildlife, including active hammerhead sharks.

There isn't one perfect season for San Cristóbal because the conditions change depending on what you want to do. December to May is a good choice if warmer water and calmer conditions matter most to you.

How Do You Get to San Cristóbal?

You can fly to San Cristóbal Airport (SCY) from Quito or Guayaquil. The airport is close to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, so you can reach the town in around 10–15 minutes on foot.

If you plan to visit more than one Galápagos island, consider flying into one island and leaving from another. This can reduce unnecessary travel back to your starting point.

One thing I like about San Cristóbal is how easy it is to get into town after landing. The airport is close to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, so you don't have a long transfer before you can start exploring.

If you're visiting more than one Galápagos island, I'd also look at flying into one island and leaving from another to avoid unnecessary backtracking.
